BMW’s first – and very possibly only – application of two-mode hybrid technology will be the new ActiveHybrid X6. The gas-electric crossover will go into production late this year and go on sale in the early part of 2010 pairing a hybrid transmission with a high output version of BMW’s 4.4-liter V8. BMW has produced a video that demonstrates the X6 in action, showing the powerflows as it transitions between electric only, blended and brake energy recuperation modes. Speaking of electric only drive, the X6 will be able to operate in silent drive at speeds up to 40 mph, significantly higher than the 25 mph of GM’s hybrid applications. The X6 will be shown next month at the Frankfurt Motor Show. Check out the video after the jump.

2010 Suzuki Kizashi Revealed - Hybrid Model to Follow: Mega Gallery with 100 High-Res Photos

The production version of the Suzuki Kizashi sedan was officially revealed today in a special launch event in Detroit. Built at Suzuki’s new manufacturing plant in Sagara, Japan, the Kizashi will serve as the company’s flagship model when it arrives in North American showrooms this winter. Available in both front- and all-wheel drive versions, Suzuki’s Mazda6 and VW Passat rival will initially be offered with a 2.4-liter four-cylinder engine linked to either a 6-speed manual transmission or optionally, a continuously variable transmission (CVT).

While the Japanese automaker did not disclose any output figures for the base four-cylinder engine, Suzuki did reveal that other powertrain options are also under development for the Kizashi including a fuel efficient hybrid version that will be added to the lineup in the very near future.

Built on a brand-new platform, the Kizashi features MacPherson struts up front and a multi-link setup in the back with Suzuki supporting that the sedan will offer drivers “a dynamic and exhilarating driving experience”.

An Electronic Stability Program and anti-lock braking system with electronic brake-force distribution as well as the Suzuki-developed synergetic vehicle dynamic control system that assists drivers control will be offered as standard on the Kizashi.

Measuring in at 183.1 in. (4,650 mm) long, 71.7 in. (1,820 mm) wide and 58.3 in. (1,480 mm) high with a wheelbase of 106.3 in. (2,700mm), the Kizashi is roughly the same size as the latest generation Audi A4 Sedan.

Despite the fact that the Kizashi originated from the Concept Kizashi series introduced over the last two years, the production model’s styling is far less dramatic, which is a shame as the concept study featured an extremely well executed design that received positive reactions from European and North American consumers alike.

As for the mid-size sedan’s interior, Suzuki’s designers crafted an elegant looking dashboard that features an Alfa Romeo-esque instrument panel with two deeply set gauges and an uncluttered center console.

More details as well as North American prices are expected to be released closer to the sedan’s sales launch in December. Suzuki has yet to announce when the Kizashi will arrive in other international markets.

2010 Porsche 911 Turbo Coupe and Convertible get New 500HP 3.8-liter Engine

Porsche has whisked the covers off its new is 911 Turbo coupe and convertible models, which boast an all-new 3.8-liter twin-turbocharged flat-six engine rated at 500 horsepower. Believe it or not, this is the first entirely new engine in the 35 year history of the Turbo. The previous 911 Turbo was powered by a twin-turbocharged 3.6-liter flat-six cranking out 480Hp and 620Nm of torque.

Based on the same 3.8-liter flat-six found on the facelifted 911 Carrera S models, the new engine comes with features such as Direct Fuel Injection and twin turbochargers with variable turbine geometry.

Furthermore, as an option, the new six-cylinder may be combined for the first time with Porsche’s seven-speed PDK Doppelkupplungsgetriebe (that’s Double-Clutch Gearbox) that can be specified with steering-wheel mounted paddle-shifts. The 911 Turbo is fitted with a six-speed manual gearbox as standard.

According to ‘das’ Germans, the new Turbo goes from zero to 100 km/h in 3,4 seconds and on to a top speed of 312 km/h or 194 mph.

Aside from the all-new powertrain, Porsche said that the updated Turbo benefits from further improvements in driving dynamics and detailed enhancement of the PTM fully controlled all-wheel drive and PSM Porsche Stability Management systems.

As with the rest of the 911 range, the Turbo receives mild styling tweaks that include new front and rear lights and minor changes in the interior.

The new model will be presented to the public for the first time at the Frankfurt Motor Show from 17 - 27 September with sales of both Coupe and Cabriolet variants starting in Europe at the end of November. The Euro base price without value-added tax and national specifications is €122,400 for the Coupe and €131,800 for the drop-top model.

General Motors to keep green car technology in house

For the first time in its 100-year history, General Motors plans to design, develop and manufacture electric motors for its growing array of gasoline-electric hybrids and electric vehicles.

The electric motors used in GM’s current lineup of hybrids are made to GM specifications by outside vendors. GM wants to bring the design and manufacturing in-house to save money and to apply its own technology to boost performance, lower weight and reduce power consumption, said Larry Nitz, GM’s chief hybrid powertrain engineer.

GM, which emerged July 10 from 39 days of Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection with $50 billion in backing from the U.S. government, has been under intense pressure to make greener vehicles as it attempts to rebuild sales and profitability. Earlier Tuesday CEO Fritz Henderson said the Chevy Volt hybrid is expected to list an unprecedented 230 mpg under new EPA mileage standards.

The first GM-designed electric motors are likely to first appear in the second generation of the Two Mode hybrid transmission, which is currently used in GM’s pickups and large sport-utilities. Buick will get a front-wheel drive version of the Two Mode transmission in an upcoming small SUV. The Two Mode transmission features two electric motors that deliver power to the wheels in both city and highway driving.

On the sidelines of a technology show and media preview of the company’s 2010 lineup here at GM’s sprawling proving grounds west of Detroit, product development chief Tom Stephens said GM must develop its core technologies in three areas: batteries, the control system for the electric and hybrid powertrain, and the electric motor.

GM already has a battery deal with a supplier and plans to build a plant to assemble the battery cells into packs. GM builds its own control systems for its hybrids. A proprietary motor was the last high tech item GM needed to complete its technology for electric and hybrid vehicles.

Said Stephens: “We’ve taken all three of these and said these are core technologies for General Motors. We’ve brought them inside and said we are going to have people dedicated to learning more about these three components.”

Nitz said some of the money to fund the electric motor plant came from a Department of Energy grant.

Stephens declined to say where the plant to build the electric motors will be located or when it would start production. But he did say that GM would be open to working with another automaker to reduce costs and would likely sell its electric drive powertrains to other automakers, much as it does its internal combustion engines.

Stephens said GM needs its own electric drive technology so that it can have maximum flexibility to produce fuel efficient vehicles.

Said Stephens: “You can make a mild hybrid, a strong hybrid, a plug-in hybrid, a battery electric vehicle, an extended range electric vehicle, you can do just about anything you want to do with this technology.”

Nissan says the Leaf EV beats the Chevrolet Volt with 367 mpg

The green car mileage race is now under way, and Nissan Motor Co. isn’t impressed by the Chevrolet Volt’s 230-mpg claim.

The Japanese automaker says its new Leaf electric vehicle gets 367 mpg, or about 60 percent better fuel efficiency.

“Nissan Leaf = 367 mpg, no tailpipe, and no gas required,” Nissan wrote on its NissanEVs Twitter page after General Motors Co. announced Tuesday that the Volt would score 230 mpg.

“Oh yeah, and it’ll be affordable too,” Nissan added, in a dig at the Volt’s estimated $40,000 sticker price. Nissan is promising that the five-passenger Leaf, unveiled Aug. 2, will be priced to compete with $25,000-$33,000 mass-market cars in the United States.

Still unclear is how the Japanese automaker derived its lofty mileage rating.

GM CEO Fritz Henderson said Aug. 11 that the EPA is developing a rating methodology for plug-in hybrids such as the Volt. Under those tentative rules, the Volt will be the first mass-produced car with a triple-digit fuel economy rating, he said.

The Volt is a gasoline-electric hybrid that runs up to 40 miles on electric power before the gasoline engine must be started to recharge the battery while it operates. The Leaf, by contrast, is powered solely by a battery that has a range of 100 miles before it needs to be recharged.

Electric vehicle mileage is typically measured in kilowatt-hours per 100 miles. But that metric is unfamiliar to most drivers, so there are ways of deriving a miles per gallon equivalent.

Nissan officials in Japan could not immediately be reached for comment.

But an article posted July 6 on the Society of Automotive Engineers’ Web site tackled the problem of calculating fuel economy numbers for electric vehicles.

Its author, Paul Weissler, estimated that the Leaf would get 367 mpg based on the Department of Energy’s method of deriving petroleum-equivalent fuel economy for electric vehicles.

In a statement responding to GM’s claims for the Volt, the EPA said Tuesday it has not yet tested a Volt and “therefore cannot confirm the fuel economy values claimed by GM.”

But the agency said it “does applaud GM’s commitment to designing and building the car of the future — an American-made car that will save families money, significantly reduce our dependence on foreign oil and create good-paying American jobs.”

Volkswagen to buy 42 percent of Porsche, full merger planned

Volkswagen will buy 42 percent of Porsche’s sports-car business en route to a full merger by the end of 2011, the companies announced Thursday.

VW will pay $4.7 billion for its initial stake in Porsche. It positions the new company to have 10 brands and global sales of 6.4 million, and Volkswagen CEO Martin Winterkorn is likely to lead the entity.

Porsche had tried–and failed–to takeover VW, but the attempt left Porsche debt-ridden and forced it to seek a deal with its much larger rival. It also led to the departure of Porsche CEO Wendelin Wiedeking. With cutbacks and sales dips by General Motors and Toyota, the merged Volkswagen could challenge for the title of world’s largest automaker.

“Volkswagen and Porsche today took a decisive step towards a joint future,” Winterkorn said in a statement. “As a group with now 10 strong, independent brands, we will further expand our unique global position. More than ever before, we now have what it takes to become the automotive industry’s number one.”

Porsche will keep its headquarters and retain some independence, similar to Audi’s arrangement under the VW umbrella.

2010 Devon GTX shown at Pebble Beach concours

The 2010 Devon GTX, a 650-hp supercar from California design house Devon Motorworks, was shown Saturday at the Pebble Beach Concours d’Elegance.

The speed demon will cost $500,000 and go on sale in the first quarter of next year. Just 36 cars will be produced per year by the company. The GTX is Devon’s first product.

Power comes from an 8.4-liter V10 that makes peak horsepower at 6100 rpm. It’s one of the most powerful naturally aspirated engines ever, and it’s paired with a six-speed manual transmission.

A racing package adds $25,000 to the sticker.

The body is aircraft-caliber carbon-fiber. The interior also uses the material to reinforce the racing seats, and also features leather and chrome fittings. Daniel Paulin was the designer.

It was tested at Willow Springs Raceway and Laguna Seca. Former 24 Hours of Le Mans winner Justin Bell was among those who participated in the car’s validation.

“It was not a specific goal to set track records at that stage of validation, but the car outperformed even our aggressive goals,” Bell said in a statement. “We are looking forward to additional testing, where I’m certain the GTX will eclipse any time we’ve set to date.”

Post-World War II Japanese tin toys on display in New York

During the rebuilding of Japan after World War II, a Japanese toy designer took a discarded tin can and molded it into an intricate model car.

Just inches in length, it created a phenomenon in the 1940s and ’50s in Japan called “buriki.” Buriki is derived from “blik,” which is Dutch for “tin toy.”

A tin Cadillac four-door convertible from 1950 is shown. The toy was called the “Electromobile” and had a battery-powered motor and working lights.

A collection of 70 tin-toy vehicles manufactured in Japan is currently on display at New York’s Japan Society Gallery. The exhibit, called “Buriki: Japanese Tin Toys from the Golden Age of the American Automobile, The Yoku Tanaka Collection,” runs until Aug. 16.

The toys include sedans, convertibles, station wagons, delivery wagons, buses, trailers and racing cars.

Tanaka is a Tokyo-based businessman who began collecting the toys in 1961.

The toys on display range from small cars such as a bottle-green Cadillac sedan that reads “made in occupied Japan,” to elaborate models made for the high-end American market.

Joe Earle, Japan Society Gallery director, said more than half of the metal toys made in Japan went overseas to help pay for vital imports such as rice.

Besides automobiles, the collection includes jets, helicopters and speedboats. Many of the tin toys are in their original packaging, including a model 1959 Ford Fairlane 500 Skyliner convertible.

The Japan Society is a nonprofit organization located in New York that presents programs in arts and culture, business, education and public policy in an effort to expand the Japanese culture.

Monster Aston Martin Vantage blasts off

Is the standard Aston Martin V8 Vantage too soft for you? If it’s something harder and louder you’re looking for, with a touch of road-racing pedigree, then US tuner Elite has just the thing.

Called the LMV/R (Le Mans Vantage/Racer), it is the result of a tuning package that turns the stock Gaydon-built machine into a scalpel-sharp Ferrari 430 Scuderia rival.

Although currently still in the planning stages, Elite has released these computer renderings along with a spec list for the car. Thanks to extensive use of carbon fibre, the final model will weigh much less than the factory version.

A bodykit stretches the wheelarches by two inches on either side, as well as adding new bumpers at the front and back, side skirts and a rear spoiler. A carbon splitter and bonnet complete the extensive aerodynamic tweaks.

Centre-locking 20-inch alloy wheels fill the extended arches, and reveal a beefed-up braking package, which is designed to rein in the Aston’s awesome speed.

A new exhaust and an ECU upgrade bring a minor increase in power, although even with the 420bhp V8 engine untouched, the crash diet means that there is a considerable power-to-weight ratio gain over the standard model.

Elite plans to sell the LMV/R through Aston’s US dealer network. Only 30 cars will be produced, with each carrying a US3,000 (£102,000) premium over the stock Vantage. Sadly for UK buyers, import duties mean it will set you back even more

Bugatti reveals one-off ‘Sang Bleu’ at Pebble Beach

Bugatti is celebrating its 100th anniversary with yet another one-off Grand Sport, called the Sang Bleu.

It was revealed Friday as part of festivities for the Pebble Beach concours weekend.

It’s a two-tone car, but paint is not the secret. Rather, blue carbon fiber set against polished aluminum is the hallmark of the exterior. The rear air scoops are also tinted blue. The rims complete the look with a two-tone finish.

Inside are leather and interior fittings chosen specifically for Pebble Beach. Bugatti is one of the featured marques of the weekend.

BMW to show production hybrid X6, 7-series at Frankfurt motor show

A pair of fire-breathing hybrids from BMW based on the X6 and the 7-series will be revealed in production guise at the Frankfurt motor show in September.

The ActiveHybrid X6

The ActiveHybrid X6 arrives in the United States late this year, followed by the ActiveHybrid 7 in the spring of 2010. Both hybrids combine electric motors with powerful twin-turbo V8 engines to boost output, performance and fuel economy, while retaining the looks of the popular conventional versions.

The X6 hybrid has a total output of 480 hp and 575 lb-ft of torque. It can run from zero to 60 mph in 5.4 seconds. But it can also run completely on electric power up to 37 mph. The range in electric mode is just 1.6 miles.

BMW says fuel consumption is reduced 20 percent on the European cycle but did not announce EPA figures.

The X6 has all-wheel drive and a two-mode transmission; one stage is for stop-and-go traffic, the other for higher speeds. It has a seven-speed automatic gearbox. The battery pack is nickel-metal hydride.

The ActiveHibrid 7–series

Hybrid flagship

The 7-series hybrid boosts power to 455 hp and 516 lb-ft of torque for BMW’s top luxury liner. It also uses a different battery technology–lithium-ion–for its hybrid powerplant. The transmission is an eight-speed automatic.

This car can hit 60 mph in 4.8 seconds, and BMW says fuel economy will be 15 percent better than what the 750i gets. It also has an auto start-stop feature and regenerative brakes.

The hybrid 7 is fitted with 10-spoke, 19-inch alloy wheels and gets special badging. Inside, the instrument cluster has displays to inform the driver of efficiency. Like the conventional version, the hybrid 7-series also will be available in a stretched-wheelbase model.

Infiniti virtually reveals 2011 M sedan at Pebble Beach

Infiniti revealed the 2011 M sedan Friday night with a virtual introduction at the Pebble Beach Concours d’Elegance.

The third generation of the luxury liner has a long hood, flared fenders that channel the Essence concept and a coupe-like roofline. It goes on sale in the spring of next year.

It will come in two versions. The M56 will get a 5.6-liter V8 making more than 400 horsepower–30 percent better than the current model–but fuel economy is still improved about 10 percent. The M37 will get a 3.7-liter V6.

The new M sedan will measure about an inch wider and half an inch lower than the current car, while maintaining the same length. This is meant to give it a sportier stance, said Infiniti design Vice President Shiro Nakamura. Also look for 20-inch wheels.

A blind-spot intervention technology will also be available. It pulls the car back into its lane if the driver tries to change lanes into another car.

Infiniti projected the image of the new M sedan onto a foam block using virtual video mapping. The live reveal is in December in Los Angeles.

Carmakers report first monthly sales rise in July

HCMC – Sixteen members of the Vietnam Automobile Manufacturers Association (VAMA) have reported a 26% year-on-year increase in July sales, the first monthly growth since the start of the year, according to VAMA figures.

They sold a total of 10,840 vehicles in July, which represent a month-on-month increase of 1,160 units and the highest monthly sales volume in seven months.

Two segments that were major drivers for growth last month were commercial vehicles which grew 35% from last July to nearly 5,340 units; and passenger ones which rose 41% to nearly 3,200 units.

The market has undergone big changes since the luxury tax law came into effect and the car ownership registration fee was slashed by 50% in HCMC and Hanoi in late April.

Automakers attributed the improvement in car consumption to the Government’s proactive measures such 50% VAT and 50% ownership tax reductions.

The auto registration fee is down to 5-6% of the list price, creating an incentive for boosting sales and thus helping the industry cope with the local economic slowdown resulting from the global recession. The lower fee is valid until the end of this year.

But in 2010 some tax incentives will be done away, so this has prompted people to buy cars this year.
For vehicles with less than 10 seats, the registration fee is 6% of the list price in Hanoi and 5% elsewhere. This Government move has fueled car sales even though the worst of the global recession is not yet over.

Another reason for the pick-up in sales this summer is the interest on car loans is down by 15-17 percentage points to 10.5%.

Foreign and domestic manufacturers that reported a rise in sales included Toyota Vietnam, Ford Vietnam, GM Daewoo, VinaStar (Mitsubishi), Samco, Truong Hai, Vinaxuki and Vinacomin-Vinacoal.

Toyota still took the market lead, with total sales amounting to 2,780 units, up 14%, followed by GM Daewoo with 1,360 units, up 87%, Ford Vietnam with 580 units, up 27%, and VinaStar with 262 units, up 49%.

Domestic producers Vinacomin-Vinacoal and Vinaxuki registered 280% and 96% year-on-year increases in sales to 19 and 970 units respectively last month. Samco and Truong Hai sales leapt 200% and 80% year-on-year to 27 units and more than 2,000 units respectively.

All the models made by Toyota Vietnam are reportedly in short supply, especially Fortuner, Altis, Vios and Camry. Customers have been told that if they place orders now, they will take delivery late this year.

The Japanese automaker has 7,780 customers queuing in lines for delivery. It has increased its assembly capacity from 76 units a day to 115 units a day, but has been unable to meet the demand, according to a representative of Toyota Vietnam.

Those who place an order for either a Honda Civic or a CRV will have to wait two months for delivery. Similarly, Ford Vietnam sales agents said a large number of orders for models like Ford Everest and Escape had made it impossible to deliver within one or two months after an order was placed.

However, the market was not rosy for multi-purpose and sport utility vehicles which declined 2% year-on-year to 2,310 units, according to VAMA.

Six- to nine-seat autos and some high-capacity models have since early April been subject to a higher special consumption tax rate. And automakers said this was the main reason for the sales slump.

As the general market outlook is positive, automakers are racing to launch new versions of their existing best-selling models to attract customers.

VAMA members sold a total of 58,740 units in the first seven months of the year, down 25% year-on-year, according to VAMA.

HCMC - Ford Vietnam late last week announced it was assembling the new mid-sized sedan Ford Mondeo at its plant in the northern province of Hai Duong to introduce to customers later this month at a competitive price to replace the imported car.

Vietnam will become the first country in Southeast Asia to manufacture this new generation Mondeo, which is popular in Europe, Australia, China and Taiwan, according to the company.

The new Mondeo is the only product receiving top investment from Ford in Vietnam, according to Ford Vietnam.
The Ford plant in Hai Duong is equipped with a new assembly line that is the first of its kind and most advanced in Vietnam.

“It utilizes the same state-of-the-art automotive manufacturing technology, which is efficient and effective, that is employed by Ford’s world-class European and North American operations,” said Michael Pease, general director of Ford Vietnam in a statement.

The new Mondeo, with its powerful 2.3-liter Duratec four-cylinder engine and new six-speed automatic transmission and fuel efficiency, has a price tag of VND836 million (US$46,990), including VAT, compared to US$56,900 for an imported Mondeo.

The new car is the first vehicle produced at Hai Duong to benefit from the new assembly line that uses a robotic system to perform “plasmatron welding” which joins the vehicle’s body and roof. The precision and uniformity of the robotic operations deliver consistency in the production of high-quality and high-value vehicles, according to the company.

Ford Vietnam in March announced the completion of the new, state-of-the art assembly line at its Hai Duong production facility. The new line represents the final piece of Ford’s US$10 million investment in Vietnam that will ensure Ford Vietnam keeps pace with strong local demand for its full line of vehicles.

In 2008, Ford Vietnam recorded its best-ever annual sales of 6,500 units, representing an increase of 108% over 2007.

The Hai Duong facility assembles the Ford Everest and Ford Escape SUVs, Ford Focus cars and Ford Transit 16 passenger vans for the domestic market.

Ford established operations in Vietnam in 1995 with a registered capital investment of over US$100 million. Today the company is the largest FDI auto maker in Vietnam.

* In related development, Vinastar as an automobile joint venture with Mitsubishi has just launched a new version of the seven-seat Zinger with automatic transmission, having earned success with the manual gearbox Zinger introduced earlier.

The new 2.4-liter Zinger GLS AT is priced at US$33,300, equipped with airbags and ABS, and comes in four colors.
In the year to date, Vinastar has sold 529 manual gearbox Zinger cars, a number agreeable to the manufacturer given the current economic slowdown. The joint venture expects the new automobile will strengthen its position and sharpen its competition on the market, according to Vnexpress.
